Frasier: Great Television Needs More Than Just A Pretty Face
by Kirill Ryabov
As sitcoms go Frasier moved you weekly through the full gamut of sitcom relationships, sibling, parental, sexual, personal, professional as well as relationship issues. But what kept it popular and loved was the shows both entertaining and relatable qualities. The wit and humor allowed you to be completely removed from the issues, no matter how close to home they hit.
The basis of the show, wrapped tightly in dry iced humor, exposes the silliness of classism, and the often suffocating attitude and ignorance of the over educated. But Frasier and Niles' arrogance and prissiness is sufficiently balanced by their ability to admit when they are wrong, and shines a glaring spotlight on that all to human character flaw, rendering them both forgivable and laughable.
That being said it's the themes that run through any program that either bind the audience or alienate them.
A program such as Alias is a good example of tagging current concerns of the world and addressing them with a the positive message that good will triumph no matter what the circumstance look like. While it also addressed relationships and relationship issues as well, it focused more on institutional structures.
Times being such as they are, with our countries major institutions, marriage, government, and religion all teetering and tottering on questionable infrastructures, programs such as Alias provide temporary glimpses of hope
Un-faitthfulness, in our personal and private unions, antagonize us daily, via the internets relentless stream of information overload. Programs such as Alias, touch on the politics of all three of these cornerstones of the crumbling American dream, and suggest to us be strong in the face of the countries current adversities. This is true for women in particular. The divorce rates are up and many more women are forced into single parent situations. Today more than ever, a woman has to know more things about the world around her.
All of the above attributes are needed to create a television idea that is valuable to the television audience. But the whole idea in any scene is enhanced and setup by the music playing in the background. Music directs the audiences attention, and brings the theme and even the relationships of the scene into focus. Music is used to direct the audience not unlike a director directs his actors.
A great program will tie the music, not just into the emotion of the scene, but the audience as well. The Gilmore Girls, a popular show that ran seven seasons, used music to develop character personalities, flaws and mindsets.
The right music, placed at the right entrance to a scene can cast a spell over the viewer, and bring them face to face with the environment and experiences of the main characters and the significance of the characters situations.
