Goodnight Sweetheart - A Much Underrated British Sitcom? by James Woolley
Goodnight Sweetheart was quite a long-running sitcom that lasted six series in the 1990s and yet it still doesn't get the recognition it deserves in my opinion. When people talk about the most popular British sitcoms, Goodnight Sweetheart rarely gets a mention.
Although I certainly wouldn't describe Goodnight Sweetheart as being one of the best British sitcoms ever made, I do think it is very much underrated by the British public because it seems to have been largely forgotten about, and yet at the time it was extremely popular.
Apart from the occasional showing on one of the digital channels, it hardly gets repeated and yet I think it deserves to be shown to today's audiences because it really was a very good series. The star of the show was Nicholas Lyndhurst who played Gary Sparrow, an ordinary man who could travel back in time to the 1940s.
A bizarre premise but the esteemed writers Marks and Gran managed to pull it off very well. We see the main character desperately trying to live two separate lives at the same time. One is in the present day with Yvonne, his forthright girlfriend, and the other is back in the 1940s in war-ravaged London, where he also becomes extremely close with Phoebe, the barmaid of the East End pub that he initially finds himself in.
This time travel element really helps to set this sitcom apart from many of the others because it is really fascinating seeing how it copes with his alternative life in a completely different era. You really get a feel for that particular age and as well as the usual funny moments you would expect from a sitcom, there are also really good storylines both in the 1940s and the 1990s.
The supporting cast are also pretty good. My favourite character is Ron Wheatcroft, who is Gary's best friend in the present day, but there are also other strong characters such as both of Gary's girlfriends and Reg of course, who is the dim-witted 1940s policeman.
I think Goodnight Sweetheart lost it's way a little bit in the last few series when the writers seemed to get a little over-imaginative as we saw Gary and Phoebe befriend Noel Coward back in the 1940s. However on the whole it was certainly one of the better sitcoms that the BBC have produced, and I personally don't think that it gets the recognition it deserves. It may not have been the funniest sitcom ever made, but it was still a very enjoyable series.
