The Fantasy of Book Clubs
by Ray Subs
Reading a book is a lot like entering a fantasy world. Book clubs have the same effect, as readers come together to enter the fantasy of a book once again, but this time together as a group. What the fantasy reveals this time, may be the same, slightly different or entirely different depending on the group as a whole.
When reading a book, we enter our own imagination and interpret the lines and words in the book in the way that our mind sees it. But what if someone else sees it a different way in their mind, and then takes you down that path. Would it alter your view of the fantasy and would it enrich it?Reading a book is a lot like entering a fantasy world. Book Club meetings can enrich the experience of reading by providing different insights and bringing out different aspects of a book, that you may have otherwise missed or that were not part of the fantasy you created while reading. The more views on a book, the better the book club and the better the experience.
The books that are chosen and read are part of the fantasy. Books such as "Blood and Brotherhood: a Novel of Love In A Time Of Hate", is one such book that provokes deep discussion and takes readers into a fantasy world that can perceived in many different ways. As part of a book club, this book has much to offer.
Eugene Stovall mixes a tale that takes place in the Roaring 20's as African American soldiers return from war. The world was in the midst of the Teapot Dome scandal, Ku Klux Klan dominance and the return of 200,000 soldiers from World War 1. Stovall takes the reader into unexamined territory where government espionage and racial hatred lived. The reader encounters veterans, spies, love and witnesses the New Negro's struggle in his quest for freedom.
