Two Thrillers to Scare You
by Chris Robertson
When I come home from work I want to read a novel that is as different as possible from my boring life at the office. I'm looking for page-turners, "can't put them down novels." I want stories full of conspiracy, love, and betrayal. I want to sit on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding. Throw in the FBI, CIA, and KGB and I'm in heaven. I know it's a good book when I skip dinner and the evening news and go to bed frightened and excited.
The books I'm talking about are thrillers. They are fast-paced and action-packed battles between the forces of good and evil. Thrillers are full of fear, suspense, and cliffhangers. Unlike mysteries, where the white hat guys and gals almost always come out on top, heroes sometimes die in thrillers. The plot is a vehicle for danger and excitement.
Nomad VI is such a book. Ultimately it's about peace, but the hero-scientist has to endure flashbacks to his days in Vietnam, kidnapping, torture, and heartbreaks in order to activate the defensive weapon system he invented to put an end to nuclear warfare. Murder, a spy ring, NASA, and brutality accompany the hero on his treacherous journey to launch the Nomad before the evil forces stop him. You will share the hero's terror as he tries to figure out who is protecting him and who is trying to destroy him.
Extra sensory perception figures heavily in I Dream of Fathom, the story of a small town paradise gone awry. Torment, seduction, and nightmares threaten the peace of Willow Valley, a picture perfect New England town. Will Abbey Newton be able to save her own daughter and the other young women of the town from the evil forces? Will the ending bring you relief or unending terror? Like many thrillers, I Dream of Fathom is not for the faint of heart.
Thrillers such as Nomad VI and I Dream of Fathom put readers on emotional roller coaster rides. Horror, conspiracy, and psychological tricks intensify the tension and plot twists confound the readers. Physical and emotional conflicts pit characters against one another. Villains and heroes populate the stories.
The author of Nomad VI and I Dream of Fathom follows a long tradition of thriller writers. Michael Crichton, John LeCarre, Alfred Hitchcock, Tess Gerritsen, and Richard Preston are some of the most well known thriller writers. Their books range from action thrillers to legal thrillers to medical thrillers to technical thrillers. Some of the plots are based on real-life issues, while others are wholly fictional. What they all have in common is the ability to twist emotions around and create deep tension.
Just in case the books aren't scary enough, many of them have been made into movies. The Manchurian Candidate is a tale of paranoia and brainwashing for political gain. In Phone Booth a man is trapped in a phone booth by a deranged sniper. The DaVinci Code is a relatively recent film adaptation of a religious thriller.
Just remember, if you are not thrilled, it's not a thriller!
